We have had a very busy and successful show season and are now making plans for next year. The rams have been out with the ewes for two weeks and 15 out of 24 have been covered. Fingers crossed for late January/early February lambs. This year we are using Hawthorns Hayden, Bryn Caffo Llordyn, Dolwen Nimble and Ruslin Zebedee (I couldn't resist giving Zeb two ewes again but he is getting to be an old boy)
We have had a very busy six weeks on the show circuit. As always we had a very enjoyable time at the Great Yorkshire Show, we had 2 x 1st, 3 x 2nd, 1 x 4th and 1 x 6th. Our lambs did extremely well with Hawthorns Poppy winning her class and Hawthorns Paddywack his. Back home on Thursday afternoon and then off to the Cumberland Show at Carlisle. It was an extremely wet day, rain and mud were the order of the day. I feel sorry for the show organisers as the weather has been very unkind to them in recent years with the 2009 show cancelled due to flooding and torrential rain last year. Our Aged Ram Bryn Caffo Lordyn was Champion and I was delighted that Hawthorns Poppy won her class again.
Returned home yesterday afternoon from a very successful Royal Highland Show. There were 57 Ryelands on parade and were a credit to the breed. Mr Ifan Lloyd of South Wales had the very hard task of judging. Susan Bryden took top honours with her aged ram, Broomwell Johnny Depp and our ewe lamb, Hawthorns Poppy was Reserve. Overall we had an improved result on previous years as we had 3rd in Aged Ram Class with 2sh Bryn Caffo Lordyn, 1st in Sh Ram Class with our own Hawthorns Nadal, 2nd in Ram Lamb Class with Hawthorns Paddywack, 1st in Breeding Ewe with Hawthorns Gillean, 5th in Sh Ewe Class with Hawthorns Eleanor, 1st in Ewe Lamb Class with Poppy and 1st in Group of Three with Nadal, Eleanor and Poppy. Nadal was Reserve Male Champion and we were delighted and extremely proud to be presented with the Reivesley Plate for the Best Lamb by Colin Silver in memory of his late wife, Gillean, quite fitting as Poppy is a grand-daughter of Reivesley Tiny.
Arrived home this morning at 12.20 a.m. from The Three Counties Show, had a wonderful time. It is the home of The National Ryeland Show and we came away with 3 x 2nd places and 1 x 3rd place - absolutely delighted. It was a long way to travel but well worth it and I would recommend the trip to everyone.
We had lovely weather at the weekend, but cold again yesterday. The grass is starting to grow and the lambs are thriving. The yearling ewes we had sheared about three weeks ago have gone outside and are literally jumping for joy! Injecting with Heptavac is the next job on our ever growing "to do" list. Hopefully, thats tonights job.
I have just been wondering when Spring is going to arrive here! Today is awful, howling gale, driving rain and bitterly cold - my poor little lambs!? I have entered the Royal Highland Show as usual and also Three Counties Show for the first time. It is the Ryeland Flock Book Society National Show and I wanted to exhibit there at least once. It is going to be a busy couple of days at Malvern as there is showing on two days. The Ryeland classes are on the Saturday and then there are also Ryeland classes on the Sunday which is Rare Breed day.
Lambing has finished for another year. Photo above shows Hawthorns Sally Ann with her ram lamb sired by Redmarley Arpeggio. Hawthorns Ali did not have triplets, she produced a lovely set ot twins, one ram and one ewe lamb.
My two AI'd ewes lambed last night, a single ram lamb and a set of twin ram lambs, three very nice lambs sired by "Redmarley Arpeggio". Six ewes left to lamb, "Hawthorns Ali" is huge and I am wondering whether she may have triplets as she has another ten days to go. Once lambing has finished, I will get into show mode, Royal Highland and Great Yorkshire Show Schedules arrived this week and I have been looking at the Three Counties Schedule on their web site. At the moment the weather is so cold, June seems along way off.
